It was merely two months prior to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that Dave Rauschkolb held the inaugural Hands Across the Sand demonstrations across a bevy of Florida beaches. Now, two years later, Rauschkolb continues his mission to “champion a new era of clean energy” by encouraging eco-minded groups and individuals to take a peaceful stand, literally hand-in-hand, on beaches across the nation and, in this case, the shores of downtown Orlando’s Lake Eola on Aug. 4. Surfrider of Central Florida and the Central Florida chapter of the Sierra Club head up the local effort. They’re asking participating groups to wear a T-shirt representative of their organizations and for individual contributors to wear black to “represent drawing a line against dependency on oil/fossil fuels.” Organizers anticipate a sizeable turnout, which they hope will encircle the entire perimeter of the lake with a sustainable chain of eco-friendly hands. – Aimee Vitek
