Dayspells are a relatively young Orlando band coming into focus. Their new two-track release is led by a song that isn’t a new song but a fresh reworking of an old song. The reimagining, however, is so significant that it sounds like not simply a new song but a new dawning for the quartet of Tim Anderson (bass), Nate Robinson (drums), Justin Swartsel (guitar, vocals) and Chris Belcher (guitar). As Swartsel puts it, “This release represents our first real introduction as a band.”

“Lost in Syndication” first appeared as the closing track of Dayspells’ 2023 debut EP, Up in the Trees. The original version, like the rest of that EP, is a gently pleasing amalgam of melodic alt-rock and post-rock atmosphere. But the new take is a much deeper and moodier affair.

It starts out as an indie-rock lullaby that gazes up at the night sky between states of consciousness. Then, midway through, it suddenly lifts off with a big guitar drop that rockets the song right up into the stars. These are dynamics designed for grand drama, and they result in a space-rock odyssey that hits the heights of vintage Denison Marrs.

The B-side is a cover of Elton John’s “Roy Rogers” that’s also an exercise in space and vastness. Together, these songs mark a defining pivot for Dayspells, one that’s the sound of a crystallizing band coming into their own. “Lost in Syndication” b/w “Roy Rogers” now streams everywhere and sits atop TLU’s Spotify playlist.
