Like their name, Double Bubble have been steadily rising the past few years. The band first emerged from the pandemic thaw in 2023 alongside acts like M.A.C.E. and Stiletto as part of a small vanguard that foreshadowed the bright new female wave now surging in the Orlando punk and indie scenes. Now, at last, this lady gang of four have gone from bubble to burst with a big new debut record that is, aptly, a double release.
Titled Redemption, the long-anticipated collection by the quartet of vocalist-guitarist Alexis, vocalist-guitarist Wilma, bassist Mary and drummer “Machine Gun” Kristin is the latest volume of the Live & Dead series by Orlando-connected punk label DCxPC Live. The A-side of live recordings was captured at the already-missed Uncle Lou’s, and the B-side of studio work was recorded at Danger Room Recording Services.
The eight live tracks are notably solid recordings that bottle the public energy without the thin sonics that usually plague concert footage. On the flip, the studio tracks, although expectedly a bit tighter, aren’t at all pristine and keep utterly true to Double Bubble’s punk marrow. Consequently, Redemption avoids the jarring disparity between the live and studio recordings that always makes one set look pale by comparison.
Collectively, the two sides provide a full composite of Double Bubble. Between the infectiousness of “Not Guilty,” the sneer of “Goldilocks Zone” and the burn of “Joe Costa 69” and “Praise Song,” Redemption is a demolition derby of punk attitude, pop bop and rock & roll romp. Stocked with gems that shine without polish, the record presents the songs and the band in their raw, natural state of punk perfection. No muss or fuss, just double the sweet trouble.
In terms of splash, this deluxe bundle of two discrete mini-albums is a cannonball of a debut. To make it especially collection-worthy, though, the record is available on limited-edition emerald-green 12-inch vinyl. Otherwise, it’ll stream on Spotify this weekend.
Also this weekend, on Independence Day, 250 years of American enterprise will culminate in Double Bubble’s release party (5 p.m. Saturday, July 4, Lil Indie’s). Like our country, the show will be free, goddammit. Supporting lineup includes The Drop Deads, 24 Hour Karate People and The Buzzwords.
