It takes a certain type of pitch-black chutzpah to tackle a song from Christian Death’s epochal 1982 debut
Only Theatre of Pain. And yet, Texas hyperviolence quartet Portrayal of Guilt wowed with their muscular take on “Spiritual Cramp,” released as a 7-inch last year. They brought the requisite drama. The rest of their output – a self-titled 7-inch and a split single with Street Sects – is discordant and fucked bleak noisecore with an avant bent, reminiscent of the mighty Today Is the Day. Live, they appear to be a kinetic ball of overcast hatred overlaid with suffocating electronics. Friday night party, anyone?
