'Sugar Man' Sixto Rodriguez visits the Plaza Live this weekend

If you’ve seen Searching for Sugar Man, the excellent documentary on Detroit musical enigma Rodriguez, you know the broad and cryptic strokes of the mysterious singer-songwriter’s life. If not, give it a quick watch, and then come back to this article. It’s fine, we’ll be here trying on sunglasses and top hats. Caught up? Excellent. Sixto Rodriguez’s late-blooming stardom is a feel-good story along the lines of Death and Roky Erickson, a story of singular vision and commitment ultimately and improbably rewarded in the musical marketplace. His epochal debut Cold Fact fearlessly stands out with a still-modern sound and personal-is-political sensibility, while Rodriguez himself ages like a fine vampyric wine.
