Every band wants to make it big. The Verve Pipe is already there, sans narcissism and with a precise sound and good lyrics. Vocalizing rock dreams on this self-titled CD, they take the limelight with the guitar-jamming “Supergig,” while they turn humble for “The F-Word,” which laments, “I’ve got to get arrested/ to keep you interested.” “Hero” has a catchy pop sound — so it makes sense that it’s the album’s first single. “Generations” tells an adventurous story, but more modest emotions are expressed in “Kiss Me Idle,” a mellow love song, and “Headlines,” a quivering lust song. The Verve Pipe hasn’t let the fame go to their head, and we can only hope that stardom will never faze them.
