South Floridian native and saxophonist Philip “Doc” Martin returns to the town where he studied music in earnest — at UCF, natch! — and played alongside free-jazz legend and Orlando resident Sam Rivers. Martin is back on familiar musical turf for a limited engagement at the Blue Bamboo in Winter Park.
After moving to the D.C. area years back, Martin made the fateful decision to supplement his musical income by becoming a dentist (hence the “Doc” moniker). Martin headlines the ’boo’s Smooth Sessions, crafting a program of velvety and silky jazz sounds for an audience eager to welcome him home.
7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 1, Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts, 460 E. New England Ave., Winter Park, bluebambooartcenter.com, $39-$55.
