Rebecca and Megan Lovell – the two sisters that front the blues rock quartet Larkin Poe – may look young, but they have more experience than some performers twice their age. As two-thirds of the bluegrass group the Lovell Sisters, Rebecca and Megan appeared on NPR’s A Prairie Home Companion, winning the Prairie Home National Teen Talent Competition and going on to win the John Lennon Songwriting Contest in 2008. After older sister Jessica decided to quit the band, Rebecca and Megan reformed as Larkin Poe – named after their great-great-great-great-grandfather, a cousin of Edgar Allan Poe. They have a near-encyclopedic knowledge of blues standards, which garnered them attention from granddad rockers like Bob Seger and Steven Tyler. Live, though, the combination of Rebecca’s soulful vocals and Megan’s stand-up lap steel rig feel immediate and visceral – anything but retro.
