Fresh in from New York City that day (Mar. 28), award-winning reed man Daniel Bennett and two wingmen kicked off a small weeklong Florida tour with a special engagement at local art-music bastion the Timucua White House.

Although Bennett has some known early roots in jazz minimalism, what was on full display here was his signature combination of jazz and folk. The grooves rolled out by his backup players (Nat Janoff on guitar and Matthew Feick on drums) were a smooth but propulsive chassis for Bennett’s polished work. More than some clinic in technique or concept, what really radiated most from the trio’s performance was the brightness of spirit in Bennett’s songs, a confluence of both his instrumental propensities (primarily sax and flute) and his melodic personality. Even the more dense and tense passages never jettisoned fluidity, and they all eventually circled back to an anchoring drift of airy insouciance. It’s a method that speaks to one who, rather than play to the jazz hard core, is more interested in splashing more color onto the palette with a good-natured, playful irreverence.
