When contemplating remix culture, one thinks of international pop and dance templates enhanced or deconstructed by a shadowy, (somewhat) parasitic cabal of DJs and producers. The clear, cool folk of Philadelphia songwriter Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn ‘ stirring, spare, complete ‘ wouldn’t appear to lend itself readily to such revisionism. So it comes as a surprise that the Olympia indie scene’s own Suzanne Vega comes away from these sonic makeovers stronger. ‘Monument,â?� as originally written and performed, was an inspiring protest entreaty; Anna Oxygen’s incremental shepherding of the track into clubland territory expands its potential for populist effect. Shawn Parke cakes ‘Mount St. Helensâ?� in static and keyboard bells before unleashing the synth beats. Yacht’s chopped, screwed and desecrated revamp of ‘Jerusalemâ?� is a crude, warping cover. This two-CD set’s crown jewel, though, is Electrosexual & Abberline’s claustrophobic, electroclash mix of murder ballad ‘Cold Cold Water.â?�
