Finally following up 2002’s I Phantom, Boston MC Mr. Lif deals more personal commentary on Mo’ Mega than that explored with his popular politically charged side project, the Perceptionists. Lif arguably does offer more Darfur discussion on album high point ‘Brothazâ? than the major news networks have in 2006 (which isn’t saying much), taking call-to-action cues from Public Enemy’s ‘Black Steel in the Hour of Chaosâ? over Def Jux head El-P’s machine-gun beat barrage and off-center atmospherics. Mo’ Mega‘s sharpest thorns are in El-P’s prominent backdrops, particularly in the stunning threefold blitz of ‘Fries,â? where two of his prime beats, outlined by electro buzzes and quivering psych fringes, meet midway in a thunderous breakdown of metal clinks and scratches. Lif rides with ease, though, confronting well-traveled tour complaints with vigor and creativity in opener ‘Collapse,â? and carries his sharp insight most of the way through his second solo LP.
