Techno plays a prominent role on Denies the Day’s Demise, though all the masterful programming is deceptively ornate, with organic percussive strokes. The Los Angeles-based sampler/collage artist draws heavily on bossa nova and progressive techno flourishes for Denies, and quirks materialize in symphonic patches, dance floor’suited synth melodies and airy swirls. Each whirlwind swoops as often and as unpredictably as his Exquisite Corpse did last year, and just because Daedelus has connected with his inner club kid, it doesn’t mean he’s disregarded his penchant for string sample manipulation. Opener ‘At My Heelsâ? is rife with cymbal crashes and a mysterious vocal loop that snakes around a section of swelling Hollywood violins ‘ the kind they use to cut off a bloated diatribe at the Oscars. While hummable bleeps quake ‘neath choice cut ‘Like Clockwork Springs,â? they don’t define it, and the constantly rattling club rush of Denies doesn’t grow stale for a second.
