Premieres Wednesday:
Caramelo — Brazil gets its own Marley & Me in the story of an ailing chef who teams up with a stray dog for a journey of self-discovery and spiritual renewal. The movie ends prematurely when they get stuck at the U.S. border because they can’t afford the entry fee of 250 bucks and a Greenie. (Netflix)
Is It Cake? Halloween — The Mikey Day-hosted bakeoff presents a special edition for the spooky season. So in a sense, it’s a lot like Dragula — except if that show had another name, it would be Is It Pie? (Netflix)
Néro the Assassin — Sixteenth-century France is the setting of an action/adventure series about a trained killer who reconnects with his daughter to protect her from his enemies. Day late and a dollar short, Néro. You were pretty damn scarce when all she wanted was a Labubu. (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
Boots — Remember when it was illegal for military servicepeople to be gay? If you don’t, just wait a few months! In the meantime, you can revisit the days of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” via this eight-episode dramedy starring a bunch of closeted Marines of the 1990s. Listen, the minute John Winger and Russell Ziskey said they were willing to learn, that horse had pretty much left the barn. (Netflix)
Oʻahu Shores — Hawaii is the setting for the latest reality series about the lives and loves of pretty young people whose existence is far more exciting than your own. What makes the show stand out is how committed this bunch remains to venerable Polynesian traditions. Like podcasting. (Peacock)
The Resurrected — Two Chinese mothers capture and torture their daughters’ kidnapper in a tale that examines the emotional limitations of revenge. Limitations? Say what you want about revenge, but it’s still the best way to get even. (Netflix)
Vgly Season 2 — Settle in for the further adventures of a Mexican rapper who’s trying to break into the music business without the benefit of money or connections. The key will be if a major label figures out a way to soak him for 85 percent of nothing. (HBO Max)
Victoria Beckham — Check in with the international celebrity and style icon in the run-up to Paris Fashion Week, as she recounts her fascinating life story in a three-part authorized documentary. Meanwhile, Sporty is over on The MotorTrend Channel, explaining how to do an engine rebuild on a ’67 GTO. (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Knife Edge: Chasing Michelin Stars — Go undercover with the culinary spies who determine what kind of Michelin rating a restaurant receives. Meanwhile, Shudder is developing a show about the secret shoppers who snitch on Hot Topic managers for putting out the One Piece merch a day early. (Apple TV+)
Kurukshetra — Ancient Indian mythology is the basis for an animated series that dramatizes an 18-day war of succession that split a prominent family in two. Spoiler: Nobody wins, and the dynasty gets sold to a Swedish tech company. (Netflix)
The Last Frontier — A U.S. Marshal is sent scrambling to protect his Alaska town after an air crash frees a planeload of dangerous criminals. But think what it would do for tourism if word got out you stood a solid chance of running into John Malkovich at the general store. (Apple TV+)
My Father, the BTK Killer — Sit down for a moving one-on-one with Kerri Rawson, who had to deal with the revelation that her father was the elusive murderer who had been terrorizing Wichita for decades. Then again, a loose copy of Frog and Toad Together could terrorize Wichita for decades. (Netflix)
Old Money — Business rivalry leads to love for a nouveau riche entrepreneur and a diplomat whose wealth runs several generations deep. You can tell the movie is Turkish, because over here, we don’t let the bluebloods hobnob with the arrivistes. (Netflix)
Swim to Me — When a woman from rural Chile takes a job as the maid to a well-off city family, the close bond she develops with their 6-year-old opens the door to all kinds of trouble. Boy, Netflix is really preoccupied with class-mixing this week for some reason. Brace yourself for an anime version of Das Kapital with voices by Babymetal. (Netflix)
The Woman in Cabin 10 — Keira Knightley plays a journalist who can’t get anyone to believe she saw a passenger thrown from a cruise ship. Hey, she still hasn’t convinced me she’s actually British. Because what is that accent supposed to be, anyway? (Netflix)
Premieres Monday:
Solar Opposites — In their sixth and final season, our cast of visiting aliens lose their renewable wealth and have to live under the same budgetary strictures as the rest of us. Hey guys: You voted for this! (Hulu)
Premieres Tuesday:
Everybody Loves Me When I’m Dead — When a couple of Thai fraudsters funnel 30 million baht from a dead woman’s bank account, they run afoul of some more experienced criminals who think the money should be theirs. Now tell me, which dog in this fight is mine again? (Text me the answer, because I’m donating plasma right now.) (Netflix)
Guts + Glory — This reality competition that has contestants confronting their most debilitating fears was postponed at the last minute from its intended drop date in early September. Fortunately, there’s been a whole lot more since then for all of us to be petrified by. (Shudder and AMC+)
Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Deathwatch — Liev Schreiber headlines the voice cast of an animated show that’s based on a series of counterterrorism-themed video games. Fun fact: Though they carry his name, the games were produced with little to no involvement from Clancy. And the tie-in novels that have been published weren’t written by him, either. But I still believe his success was due to his firm and unshakable work ethic, because that’s what my AI told me. (Netflix)
