Premieres Wednesday:
Everybody Live With John Mulaney — Baby J builds on the success of his Everybody’s in LA specials with a weekly variety talk show that’s going to go out live around the world, with no delay to hamper the free expression of his guests. Come to think of it, isn’t it time Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake collaborated again? (Netflix)
Temptation Island — This season’s quartet of participating couples come to the table bearing a history of past infidelity and economic insecurity. But the biggest challenge to their ability to remain faithful is all those great anonymous offers the ladies are getting from somebody on X who wants to buy them a pony. (Netflix)
Welcome to the Family — A single mom teams up with her dead father’s widow to thwart the mob, in a Mexican series that’s actually a remake of a 2018 Catalan show of the same name. In each case, the women’s big plan is to hide the guy’s corpse and pretend he’s still alive, which means we can’t pretend the idea originated with Jill Biden. (Netflix)
Premieres Thursday:
Adolescence — The English expose their dark side in a four-part drama about a schoolboy who’s accused of murdering one of his classmates. The gimmick is that each episode was filmed in one continuous shot. Great! I’ve always wanted to see Rope remade by people who are only allowed to defend themselves with actual rope. (Netflix)
Long Bright River — Amanda Seyfried says she feels personally connected to the role she plays here as a Philadelphia cop combating the scourge of opioid addiction. Mostly because she’s from … Allentown. Hey, close enough. When you really get down to it, there’s little difference between a fentanyl epidemic and having your economic decline immortalized by Billy Joel. (Peacock)
Love Is Blind: Sweden — The 30 contestants in Season 2 represent a wide range of single working professionals, from project managers to a middle-school teacher to a tattoo artist. If the Swedes really want to test the premise of this show, they need to throw in somebody who’s on the dole and see if they can still get it. Love Is Broke! (Netflix)
The Wheel of Time — New environments and dangers await in Season 3, as Rosamund Pike welcomes us back to a fantastic realm where the power to work magic rests solely in the hands of women. Which is nice, but what they really wanted was pockets. (Prime Video)
Premieres Friday:
Dope Thief — Peter Craig, co-writer of The Town and The Batman, created this series based on Dennis Tafoya’s novel about buddies who land in a world of hurt by impersonating DEA agents. Their biggest mistake was posing as government employees but acting like they still had a job. (Apple TV+)
The Electric State — While they figure out how to bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the MCU without starting a real civil war, the Russo Brothers try to bank some good will with this star-studded trip through an alternate 1990s that’s defined by technological collapse. Hmm, a timeline where Iron Man likely couldn’t have existed … a little wish fulfillment for the overtaxed, fellas? (Netflix)
Premieres Tuesday:
Bert Kreischer: Lucky — The onetime Human Dad Bod runs through a list of everything he has to be grateful for, including the dramatic overhaul he made to his life and career by dropping 45 pounds. We keep telling you, Bert: Losing Ariana Grande as a fan doesn’t count. (Netflix)
