Premieres Wednesday:
American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson — If a broken leg didn’t enable you to spend six months of the halcyon days of 1995 glued to the TV watching the goings-on in Judge Lance Ito’s courtroom (true story!), here’s your chance to learn all about what we considered the Trial of the Century before Amber Heard decided that getting up to use the john isn’t always the play. Viewers who were not alive at the time may be surprised to learn that OJ didn’t really look all that much like Cuba Gooding Jr. (Netflix)
The Hooligan — A Polish ne’er-do-well is released from prison just in time to see his son taking up his mantle of lawlessness — and for their favorite football team’s rivalry with another squad to sink to a new low of violence. Orlando could be having fun like this, but nobody’s willing to drive a Cybertruck to the front office of Inter Miami. (Netflix)
Mythic Quest — Our team of game developers faces fresh trials in Season 4, including a stepped-up effort to find the proverbial work-life balance. As opposed to gamers themselves, who are mostly concerned with balancing virginity and pizza rolls. (Apple TV+)
Six Nations: Full Contact — Season 2 of the rugby docuseries delves even deeper into the athletic and personal lives of star players like Marcus Smith, England’s fly-half. Can’t wait for the expert analysis by Jeff Goldblum, America’s half-fly. (Netflix)
Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man — Marvel wants you to understand that this new animated series about the web-slinger’s formative years is not in continuity with the Tom Holland films. Or with Sony’s Villain-Verse. Or the theatrical Spider-Verse. Level with us, fellas: What is still canon at this point? The Charles Atlas ad in “Amazing Fantasy 15”? (Disney+)
Premieres Thursday:
Mermicorno: Starfall — The tokidoki “lifestyle brand” scores its first animated series with the undersea adventures of a character who’s half mermaid and half unicorn. At least that’s what Badtz-Maru says to avoid paying child support. (Max)
Mo — This second season is the last for Mo Amer’s Peabody Award-winning dramedy series about a Palestinian family seeking permanent asylum in America. See, once again Netflix is ahead of the curve, because they’ve never considered any of their series to have birthright citizenship. (Netflix)
The Recruit Season 2 — After a hiatus of just over two years, CIA lawyer Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo) is back, this time to tamp down some serious ish that’s going down in South Korea. Let me guess: America is trying to wriggle out of carrying that third season of Squid Game. (Netflix)
The Seven Deadly Sins: Four Knights of the Apocalypse — Fans are expecting about 50 chapters of the source manga to be covered in this Season 2, as Percival the knight comes closer to fulfilling his destiny of destroying the world. Hey, remember when we couldn’t understand why that made him a hero? (Netflix)
Premieres Friday:
Dark Match — Chris Jericho stars in a horror flick about a wrestling operation that runs afoul of a cult of dangerous fanatics. Right, because WWE fans are nothing of the sort. (Shudder)
The Eastern Gate — The fragility of NATO is the leitmotif of this Polish espionage drama, which puts a Secret Service agent (Lena Góra) on the hunt for her vanished partner. Fragility? That’s an understatement. I don’t know what’s going to last longer, this season or NATO. (Max)
Lucca’s World — Barbara Anderson’s book The Two Hemispheres of Lucca is the foundation for a dramatization of her family’s pilgrimage to India, where they pursued a revolutionary treatment for her son’s cerebral palsy. What, they’ve never heard of Ivermectin? (Alternate joke: The story takes an unexpected turn when Suzanne Vega learns the kid is getting the shit beat out of him.) (Netflix)
The Snow Girl 2: The Soul Game — Season 2 adds Miki Esparbé to the cast, as a fellow journalist who joins Milena Smit’s Miren Rojo in investigating the killing of two young girls. Fun fact: Setting the story in a world where a newspaper can afford to assign two reporters to the same story qualifies the movie for a nomination as science fiction at the next Saturn Awards. (Netflix)
