The first time we encountered the music of Ani DiFranco was spying a stack of her self-released cassettes at a feminist bookstore somewhere in Florida; it was a fitting introduction to an artist who has done it her own DIY and, yes, feminist way since the early 1990s.
From impassioned folk-punk beginnings to sidestepping the music industry with her own imprint Righteous Babe Records, to decades spent in the trenches of progressive political activism, 1-800-ON-HER-OWN has one hell of a story to tell.
This cinematic portrait of DiFranco’s long and fiery career screens one night only at Enzian Theater, ahead of her show in the flesh next week.
2 p.m. Saturday, March 1, Enzian Theater, 1300 S. Orlando Ave., Maitland, enzian.org, $12.50.
