The short stories of A.M. Homes yield a seemingly bottomless supply of suburban heartbreak. A catatonic car-crash victim is the common thread between four families with little to hide and nothing to lose. Surprise! He’s also the most lively figure in this stale leftover from the 2001 Toronto Film Festival, which has nothing new to say and no new way of saying it.
