After Pom Moongauklang shuttered her Milk District teahouse and sandwicheria for good in October of 2024, she and an unnamed partner were going to transform the space into a high-end omakase joint that would require her to “put on her chef coat” and “add molecular touches” to dishes.
That idea never panned out, but the space will see a high-end omakase joint — Q Sushi — move into the space at 67 N. Bumby Ave. (map) this May.
Billed as “an omakase bar,” Q is led by a chef-restaurateur who prefers to remain anonymous for now, but who brings nearly three decades of experience with Japanese cuisine.
The independent concept is not affiliated in any way with Pom.
Q’s omakase experience will be centered around an intimate, eight-seat counter with a focus on seasonal Japanese fish and premium ingredients, including high-quality sushi rice seasoned with traditional dark red vinegar, and house-made soy sauce “to highlight depth, balance and authenticity in flavor.”
Guests will choose between nigiri- or sashimi-focused options, each available in two pricing tiers depending on the selection and number of pieces. The nigiri omakase will range from $40–$75 and the sashimi omakase will range from $45–$80.
In addition to the omakase experience, a five-course kappo-style option featuring seasonal appetizers, nigiri, sashimi, a rotating traditional Japanese dish and dessert will be offered for between $120-$140.
“It’s designed for guests who want to step outside their usual dining routine and enjoy a more curated and immersive experience.”
A selection of appetizers, small kitchen dishes and à la carte nigiri and sashimi will also be offered, as will Japanese craft beers and premium sake selections to pair with the food.
As for the name, it’s a personal one for the chef-owner.
“My family has always given me unlimited support, allowing me to focus fully on my work and my passion. Their names all begin with the letter “Q,” so the name is a tribute to them.”
