Live music, good wine, flaming cheese. That’s what you’ll find at this year’s Orlando Greek Fest at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Maitland Friday, Oct. 5 through Sunday, Oct. 7. Saganaki, the soft goat’s milk cheese set aflame with a shot of brandy, is just one of the authentic dishes offered: Friday’s takeout box lunch includes lamb shank, gyros, roasted chicken or pastitsio (a rich ground-beef casserole with tomato and cream sauce). All that and seven different varieties of pastry are available at each evening’s seated dinner in the Agape Ballroom.
There will be plenty of activities for the kids while you’re munching on that slice of baklava. Bounce houses and obstacle courses will provide some energy-expending entertainment, while cotton candy and sno-cones will serve to refresh and reinvigorate the little ones. The Hellenic Dance Troupe will demonstrate dances from various regions of Greece. The troupe is comprised of school-age children from the parish, and they know more Greek dances than Zeus had lovers. Finally, the Grecian Strings will perform live music throughout the weekend; with two band members named Taki, they’re the real deal. Enjoy their Cretan melodies while sipping a glass of full-bodied Greek wine or beer ($4) and enjoying the stunning architecture of the church, the lush and peaceful surroundings, and a bowl of flaming cheese.
