Universal Orlando has confirmed that construction activity is underway in Islands of Adventure’s Lost Continent area.
“In the coming months, there will be construction activity in Lost Continent as part of site planning to ensure the area is ready for any future developments,” Universal Director of Public Relations Kristen Smith said in a statement to Orlando Business Journal.
A recent demolition permit filed with the City of Orlando suggests the wheels are turning. However, so far no contractor has been selected, indicating that Universal is still in the early planning stages of what’s to come.
Buzz is spreading with what the park will redevelop Lost Continent into, though nothing has been confirmed. Rumors noted by Orlando Park Stop suggest the area could be reimagined as a Legend of Zelda-themed land. The Nintendo property would fit into Universal’s growing partnership with the video game, which has already led to the creation of Super Nintendo World inside the Epic Universe theme park.
Lost Continent was one of the original lands in Islands of Adventure, opening with the park in 1999. The land was brimming with mythical beasts, legendary gods and architecture inspired by ancient ruins. Today, it’s mostly known for its themed retail shops and dining options, as well as the award-winning Mythos sit-down restaurant and two quick-service locations.
Over the years, the land’s main attractions have slowly disappeared. The Eight Voyages of Sinbad, a student show closed in 2018. In 2023, Poseidon’s Fury, a walk-through special effects adventure, closed permanently.
Earlier in Island of Adventure’s time, it was home to the famous Dueling Dragons coaster, which was reimagined and folded into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
The Lost Continent work comes as Universal continues to shake up its parks. Following the grand opening of the massive new Epic Universe, Universal has shut down the years-old Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit coaster, to be replaced with another project that has yet to be revealed.
