Well, we're movin' on down ...
Right, OK, not everyone's brain immediately associates a '70s TV theme song with every event. But when I heard that Bookmark It was moving downstairs
The important news is that the bookstore is more discoverable now, and the increase in foot traffic may help raise the profile for not just their wares but also their events. In this Amazon/Kindle age, a bookstore's not an easy thing to nurture, but the small/indie-owned model seems to be surviving and thriving. Stop by Bookmark It's new digs at 6 p.m. tonight (Friday, April 3) for a christening of the space and a champagne toast with owner Kim Britt and her extremely knowledgeable staff.
Speaking of indie-owned bookstores: If you're not the drinky type or you have some inexplicable aversion to rustic-chic food halls, Rollins grad and Central Florida native Laura van den Berg reads from and signs copies of her new book, Find Me (Farrar, Straus, Giroux) at Winter Park's Writer's Block bookstore 6 p.m. Friday, the same time as the champagne toasts at East End Market. In our roundup of Florida books last year, I admitted that I ripped through my advance reader's copy in a week flat, predicting that the taut dystopian novel would be a blockbuster when it hits bookstores.
Part deux of your literary weekend, if you hit Bookmark It Friday night or just want to double up on the van de Berg goodness: She gives another free reading at the University Club 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 4. Find times, addresses, phone numbers, et cetera below for all three of these events.
