Fort Lauderdale beat the rest of the state’s major cities to the punch by electing its first openly gay mayor.

Attorney and City Commissioner Dean Trantalis beat out Vice Mayor Bruce Roberts in Tuesday’s race, making history along similar lines as John Fiore, who became Broward County’s first openly gay mayor in 2000, and Orlando Weekly’s own late Billy Manes, who became the first openly gay mayoral candidate in Orlando when he ran in a special election in 2005, though the race was later canceled.

However, for as much reason as there is to congratulate the state's historical watermark, Trantalis’ sexual orientation wasn’t an issue oft discussed during the campaign until opponent Bruce Roberts sent out a mailer featuring a Trantalis dummy in makeup, with a Trantalis ventriloquist wearing a tuxedo – which Trantalis’ supporters called homophobic.

“These are outfits I would never be seen in,” Trantalis reportedly joked.
