On Tuesday, just less than three dozen GOP lawmakers called on their fellow Republicans to finally help legislate a solution for DACA recipients.
DACA — shorthand for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, an Obama-era executive order that grants those brought to the U.S. illegally as children the right to live, work and study via a two-year renewable permit — has been a hot-button issue since long before the 2016 presidential campaign, when then-candidate Donald Trump made crackdowns on undocumented immigration a key part of his political platform.
From the
Washington Post:
The 35 members of the House GOP caucus — 34 representatives and Puerto Rico’s nonvoting member — represent the largest bloc of Republicans to date to publicly voice support for a solution to one of the most emotionally charged elements of the years-long fight over immigration policy.
“They are American in every way except their immigration status,” the group wrote.
President Trump has given Congress until March 5 to find a permanent solution for the more than 700,000 DACA recipients nationwide — 33,000 of whom reside in Florida — or else they will run the risk of being deported.
