Count your summer-cinema blessings, because this stylish yet restrained thriller finds Michael Mann indulging most of his best qualities and few of his worst. Immediately establishing an entrancing, dreamlike mood, Mann takes us for an overnight spin with cabbie Max Durocher (Jamie Foxx), who becomes the terrified hostage of a coolly homicidal fare (Tom Cruise). As the delicious tension keeps on mounting, this twisted, beautifully filmed Los Angeles travelogue is lent added immediacy by periodic injections of digital video. Foxx's subtle performance proves that he is quietly becoming one of our best actors, and as the sinister pickup, Cruise reverses a sad recent trend by not in any way disgracing himself. The wrap-up of the film doesn't nearly live up to the preceding suspense, but it's no fatal failing to appreciate the smoothness of a ride far more than anywhere it took you.
