One of Orlando’s most coveted midnight-munchie Mexican-inspired eateries is long gone.
Gringos Locos abruptly shut down all of its locations, including the original shop downtown, over the weekend.
The restaurant was a pillar of Orlando’s late-night culture, one of the few (but cult-followed) food options open after midnight. Fans fondly remember the Double D’s, tacos with both soft and hard shells layered and glued together with cheese.
By Monday morning, the lights and screens of the downtown location were turned off and doors locked, despite the sign still on display indicating operating hours. Gringos Locos has not made any public announcements about the closure.
The locations in the Milk District, SoDo and UCF’s main campus have all closed, but job postings are still up on their website. It appears as if the ordering function remains, with most of their items reading “out of stock.”
An employee at a restaurant near the downtown shop told News 6 that while loading her car, she noticed the managers come outside shocked and crying after hearing the news. It appeared they had not known about the closure beforehand.
Orlando Weekly called all of the locations for comment, but the calls all went directly to voicemail.
