
The roots of this unique night of orchestral music dubbed “Synthony” — whether consciously or not — lie in a delightfully oddball 1968 album called Switched-On Bach.
Over 12 tracks, trans synth pioneer Wendy Carlos took on the canon of the titular classical composer solo, armed only with an array of arcane modular synths. Against the odds, it became a bit of a hit and is still a cult classic.
On Friday, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra teams with DJs and singers to reinterpret the modern EDM sounds of Avicii, Bob Sinclar, Calvin Harris, David Guetta and the like. Will it draw in the EDC crowd? (Or will EDC later this year draw in the symphony crowd?) We’ll find out.
