If you’ve seen Searching for Sugar Man, the excellent documentary on Detroit musical enigma Rodriguez, you know the broad and cryptic strokes of the mysterious singer-songwriter’s life. If not, give it a quick watch, and then come back to this article. It’s fine, we’ll be here trying on sunglasses and top hats. Caught up? Excellent. Sixto Rodriguez’s late-blooming stardom is a feel-good story along the lines of Death and Roky Erickson, a story of singular vision and commitment ultimately and improbably rewarded in the musical marketplace. His epochal debut Cold Fact fearlessly stands out with a still-modern sound and personal-is-political sensibility, while Rodriguez himself ages like a fine vampyric wine. Check out the vintage for yourself.
