Deputies are still investigating the crime and say they have not identified a culprit, Buzzfeed reports.
Despite Clarke clearly identifying as a woman, police and local media have misgendered her, and detectives have told Buzzfeed that their office has “no indication” that Clarke’s gender identity was the reason for her murder.
The National Coalition of Anti-Violence Programs (NCAVP) listed in a press release the names of the other nine transgender women who have been murdered so far this year, which includes: Papi Edwards, Lamia Beard, Ty Underwood, Yazmin Vash Payne, Taja Gabrielle de Jesus, Penny Proud, Kristina Gomez Reinwald, London Chanel, Mercedes Williamson, with the majority of the listed being black transgender women.
The NCAVP also reported that out of the 20 anti-LGBTQ homicides in 2014, the majority were transgender women, and half were transgender women of color.
A vigil for Clarke is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday in downtown Tampa, according to the Tampa Tribune.
