Orlando Commissioner Sam Ings has filed to run for mayor in an attempt to unseat longtime incumbent Mayor Buddy Dyer.
Ings was elected to represent District 6 on the Orlando City Council in 2006. The district includes the neighborhoods of Holden Heights, MetroWest, Washington Shores and Universal Studios.
Before becoming commissioner, Ings spent more than 30 years at the Orlando Police Department, retiring as captain of the west patrol division. He also served two separate terms as captain of the criminal investigation division.
Dyer, who’s been Orlando’s mayor since 2003, filed for re-election earlier this month. Other candidates in the race for mayor include Shantele Bennett, Jentri Casaberry and Aretha Simmons.
