If the WB had a queer sister channel, here’s what its programming might look like. Happily sequestered at theater camp, a group of high-school drag queens and fag hags find their cherished summer hang turned topsy-turvy by the arrival of a dreamy straight boy who instantly becomes the subject of all their fantasies. (The movie does a pretty good job of objectifying him, too.) A handful of awfully catchy original songs highlight the movie’s warmed-over Sondheim-isms, but the “dramatic” portion of this kinda-satirical, kinda-not production is strictly amateur-hour. The plotting and performances are so rarely on the same page that the moments of motivational lucidity seem to have been arrived at almost by accident.)
