Red Porno was the fourth in a series of five Angel Guts films produced by Tokyo’s Nikkatsu Studios between 1978 and 1988. All five were marketed as a boxed set last year, but Arts Magic’s decision to release the individual titles is a wise move. Just how much bondage and rape can any sane person handle in one sitting? Though less sexually violent than others in the series, 1981’s Red Porno is nonetheless a tough pill to swallow; a scene of a girl masturbating with sharpened pencils and a condom-wrapped egg is one of its gentler moments. A psychologically dense plot dealing with voyeurism and multiple identities combines with high production values to elevate it beyond easy classification. Even more interesting is a veiled feminist subtext: The ‘gutsâ?� are of the ‘strength and spiritâ?� sort, and seeing the egg-fucking protagonist declaim against ‘pervertsâ?� only drives the point home â?¦ so to speak.
