There is life after Tripping Daisy, it turns out; the euphoric, orchestral Polyphonic Spree and nu-proggers Secret Machines have arisen from the ashes of the late Dallas psych-pop band to achieve reasonable, if not spectacular, levels of indie-level success. Here’s hoping that the purposefully wank-y Pleasesuite will bring Philip E. Karnats at least a modicum of fame. Here, Karnats ‘ who played banjo and guitar with Daisy for the band’s final two years of operation ‘ massages a mood-ring lamp until eclectic rock genies swirl out. He waxes acid-flashback wistful on the barely-there acoustic prickle of ‘1,000 Girls,â? het-up hollers on the giddy, lo-fi shred clinic ‘Early Bird Cartoons,â? mumbles defeatedly through the Alka-Seltzer organ soak of ‘Smoke + Sedimentâ? and contentedly sighs as ‘And It’s Still Beautifulâ? heaves and baffles like Animal Collective zonked on Zoloft.
