While it’s unlikely to unleash anything as spellbinding as that one time when everybody cared about spelling bees because that girl we can’t remember nervously fiddled with her face between each painfully recited letter to the delight of television audiences everywhere, the third annual Lawyers for Literacy Spelling Bee does boast a more philanthropic – if slightly geeky, in a way that involves balding people wearing antennae headbands in the evening hours – motivation than smugly crowding your Harvard application in the service of future riches. You might need those riches, though, if you want to hang with really smart lawyers, from local big and small firms alike, out on a brainiac’s bender. Tickets for this Adult Literacy League fundraiser are a cool o-n-e h-u-n-d-r-e-d d-o-l-l-a-r-s, meaning that at p-r-i-m-a f-a-c-i-e, you’re probably not much into tort reform. Still, WESH-TV newsman Jim Payne and former Mix 105-FM morning chanteuse Erica Lee are among the judges, and city attorney Mayanne Downs is emceeing, so it’s bound to be a right g-a-m-b-o-l. – Billy Manes
