The Get Out the Vote Rally takes place Saturday, Nov. 2, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. in Orlando’s Milk District, and is a part of the Action Weekend for Amendment 4 by Progress Florida. The voter-outreach weekend is filled with a lineup of events, featuring guest speakers, volunteer opportunities and more — all in support of Florida’s Amendment 4. There will be music, free food, activities and childcare available at each event.
Preceding the rally, the Florida Access Network will host a potluck dinner and Repro Kit Packing Party at 6 p.m. on Friday. After the rally Saturday morning, there will be a canvass event and phone banking event. On Sunday, there will be a volunteer initiative to spread awareness on the last day of early voting in Florida.
The Get Out the Vote Rally and surrounding events come as a part of the organizers’ goal to pass Florida Constitutional Amendment 4 on the ballot, which would repeal the current six-week ban on abortions in Florida.
The passing of Amendment 4 would legally enshrine the right to an abortion for any reason in the Florida Constitution until the state of fetal viability, or at any point in pregnancy when necessary to protect the patient’s health.
The current Florida ban only allows abortion to occur during the first six weeks of pregnancy for elective reasons. It provides exceptions for rape and incest up until 15 weeks and allows the procedure past that to protect the life of the patient.
Progress Florida is an organization that aims to promote progressive values through organizing, media outreach and collaborating with other prominent organizations. The nonprofit pushes for policies by “empowering citizens in their communities” and advocating for social justice, reproductive freedom, health care reform, environmental protection and more, according to its website.
This event is hosted in partnership with YesOn4 Florida, Florida Access Network, League of Women Voters and Men4Choice, along with other political nonprofits and advocacy groups.
Florida early voting is ongoing now through Sunday, Nov. 3 at various locations. Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, at your assigned precinct and polls are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
