Combining characters from different comic book universes, Gotham City’s Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are celebrating their honeymoon alongside the X-Men’s Logan/Wolverine at a tropical island resort. All of a sudden, one of their good friends is murdered. With the help of the audience, the couple collects clues, questions suspects and eventually solves the mystery. A Harlivy Honeymoon Whodunnit?!, the latest show from Bombshells Cosplay writer Brooke Yost and director Danielle Bloom, includes solo and duet jukebox musical acts, improv tactics and audience inclusion — an interesting mix of techniques used to tell an LGBTQ+ story in an alternate universe in a cabaret setting.

The super-criminal couple uses musical numbers, dances and audience responses to figure out who’s the murderer behind the mayhem on their honeymoon, while also battling personal problems like ex-lovers and conflicting characters who are out to get them. What makes this ensemble an interesting batch, though, is that none of this will remain the same for the next show; the cast of characters from different comics changes with each performance.

A lot of the show felt improvised, as the storyline and sequence of events were determined by the amount of engagement they got from the audience. Some of the plot points even felt obviously made up on the spot. At times, dialogue tended slightly sluggish, with awkward spots of silence or overlapping lines (a common pitfall in improv-style shows). But the cabaret-style acts in between the case-solving got a lot of good laughs out of the audience, and the storyline was entertaining overall, especially considering that some of the participating cosplayers don’t typically perform as these characters — kudos to them.

This show doesn’t feel accessible to all audience members (particularly those who don’t follow DC Comics characters that closely). However, for anyone interested in sexy superheroes, it’s definitely worth seeing once; then perhaps again, with a different beginning, middle and end.
