Winter Park caffeine haven and arts hub Austin’s Coffee was the victim of a smash-and-grab this week — during an already uncertain time for the local institution.
According to information shared on social media, the bohemian hub was robbed in the early hours of Wednesday when someone smashed through the glass doors with a brick … to grab some beer. The thieves reportedly made off with a few cases of beer, after doing a couple thousand dollars’ worth of damages to the space.
“So you threw a brick in to steal beer?” read a post on Austin’s Coffee’s Instagram account. “We try so hard to be open for the community, to have a home, and often shake our heads in disbelief. We do not get rich off this business. We barely make ends meet if you even call it that.”
This is all happening against a backdrop of the City of Winter Park purchasing the block on which Austin’s sits, making for an uncertain future for the café, which has been in that space for two decades.
Austin’s currently has a CashApp link up asking for donations to the cost of door repair.
