Top of the game 

In the world of online publishing, industry recognition doesn't get any better than an EPpy Award. And Orlando Weekly was recently announced as a finalist in the prestigious competition that will be decided Feb. 19 at the Interactive Newspapers ‘99 conference in Atlanta. The awards are sponsored by Editor & Publisher Interactive, the new-media division of Editor & Publisher Company.

The nomination recognizes Orlando Weekly's push to be different with the June 1998 launch of its online edition. broke ground among its peers with a format dedicated to function -- fast download, searchable databases -- to enhance the newspaper's award-winning news and entertainment coverage.

The awards program is only in its third year, with a growing profile -- one that mirrors Internet publishing itself -- that has made it a high point of the annual conference, now in its 10th year. The awards serve to "identify and honor the best work by the newspaper industry in the online/Internet field." Nearly 400 entries were submitted in 18 categories, juried by a team of 30.

Orlando Weekly was one of three finalists in the "Best Overall U.S. Newspaper Online Service -- Weekly, Community, Free & Alternative" category. The other nominees are the San Francisco Bay Guardian and The Chronicle of Higher Education -- Academe Today. Find a complete list of nominees at the EPpy Awards website.
