Too Short is too tardy to jump on the dubstep train

In which the sex-obsessed West Cost rap legend writes a singular verse over an EDM beat, invites Millennial spitter Oh Blimey to lend the second, and then commissions 10 remixes of the finished product. “Weird Science” isn’t a terrible song – Too $hort remains oddly charming in that “dirty uncle” kinda way all these years later, and San Fran native Blimey seems to like the same kind of raucous fun – but it also isn’t fantastic or substantial enough to warrant an entire album of re-tinkerings. There’s a little sadness as well in watching an artist jump on the dubstep train at such a tardy juncture. (You can almost picture $hort’s arm straining to grab the railing of the passing caboose.) Remixers such as Trevor Kelly, Skulltrane and Dirty Monkey also miss the golden opportunity to blend “Weird Science” with the beloved Oingo Boingo song of the same name.
