Tim Hecker’s ‘Virgins’ is dizzyingly invigorating

Tim Hecker – Virgins
★★★★ (out of 5 stars)

Electronica experimenter Tim Hecker released his sparse, minimalistic seventh studio album, Virgins, and it’s a spiraling descent from heaven into hell via whirring noises and a gang of often unidentifiable instruments. The Canadian artist is no newcomer to the drone and ambient scene, but Virgins is not just another stepping stone into his blossoming ambient repertoire. It’s a staunch move to prove that he is in control of the bleak and often dizzying eclectic progressions he creates. Whether it’s the seamless movement from “Live Room,” with its creepy scratches and singular key strokes, into the mellow and calming clarinets of “Live Room Out,” or the way “Stigmata I” slowly gives way to “Stigmata II,” this album is one continuous drone into deep dissonance. “Stab Variations” sadly concludes the album on an abrupt, unfulfilled and fizzled-out ending, but the journey to the top is just as invigorating as the fall.
