The name pretty much says it all

Wedged into the corner of the Edgewood Isle mall, which itself is wedged into the south tip of the island of land where north- and south-bound Orange Avenue diverge, is Whammies Good Eats, an unassuming eatery with a well-deserved reputation. If you find yourself in the neighborhood, and don't drive by the place before you see it, and it's lunch time (they close at 4:30 p.m. on weekdays, but are open from 11 a.m. to "whenever" on Saturdays), make sure to stop.

The menu is basic: burgers, dogs, pitas, wings, ice cream, etc., and the d?cor is unexceptional. But Whammies sweats the details. A chicken pita I had there recently came to the table with big chunks of grilled white-meat chicken, dark-green romaine lettuce, tomato slices, lots of onions and tangy sauce bundled together in a soft pita. Add a big pile of fries and the whole, quite excellent, meal came to $6. The Angus beef burgers are also as good as they sound, though the Mad Cow special (a quarter-pound burger with fries, $5) was a bit too literal for me. Whammies serves Vienna Beef hot dogs (Chicago style, or get 'em with chili if you must) and Polish sausages.

Next time I'm out there I'm going to try the Italian beef, and if it's as good as it looked coming out of the kitchen for another customer, I'll have yet another reason not to drive by the place.
