The best jazz, opera and classical performances coming to Orlando this fall

This fall's classical music offerings are a diverse bounty of orchestral listening to suit all tastes. The events we are highlighting are the fall slates of a number of hardworking and creative arts organizations putting on classical and opera concerts, and one-off engagements from touring productions and performers. So on the one hand, you've got Susan Cahill, a young firebrand who's worked with Terry Riley and Yoko Ono, and on the other, your parents' favorite superstar conductor/violinist, the "King of Romance," Andre Rieu. And you know what? Both sides win.

AMF and Timucua Arts Foundation landed a big get with the announcement of Cahill in December. Says Timucua Arts director Chris Belt: "Susan Cahill is an astounding musician. The list of composers who have written for her includes John Adams, Terry Riley, Frederic Rzewski, Pauline Oliveros and Yoko Ono. We're talking about the absolute upper echelon of contemporary composers dedicating works to her."

Other highlights include the return of the Women in Song series for a second year, with performers like Kaia Kater and Heather Masse. Meanwhile Orlando Philharmonic and Dr. Phillips Center go big with command performances from Yo-Yo Ma and Wynton Marsalis, respectively.

For those who like their classical a little more on the cinematic side, O.Phil will pay tribute to the music of Star Wars and Harry Potter on separate nights, while the Dr. Phillips Center hosts La La Land: The Musical with live orchestral accompaniment. Opera Orlando puts on an ambitious production of La Bohème and gets in the holiday spirit with Amahl and the Night Visitors. On stages large and small, you'll have your choice of elevated sonic delights.
