Stars not barred

The American flag flies over Orlando, thanks to a quick adjustment in Orlando's flag ordinance. On Monday the city council passed a measure that allows flags to be flown from city light posts for any event that is hosted, sponsored or run by the city. Under the old rules, the city did not have to be involved so long as the group wishing to fly their flags got city permission and paid city workers to hang their banners.

The rule sparked controversy last month when Watermark staff members got permission to hang rainbow flags commemorating Gay Pride Month. That got right-wing Rev. John Butler Book worked into a lather, demanding pro-hetero banners, leading to a city council moratorium on all flags, which in turn threatened traditional, family-values-friendly American flags.

Now all is well, however, and that star-spangled banner yet waves.
