Split decision no longer

The ballots are in, and members of the national Sierra Club -- riven by a debate on immigration fueled by those who want to close U.S. borders -- have reaffirmed the organization's policy to stay neutral on the issue ["Split decision, April 2].

Votes counted last weekend showed that about 84,000 of the club's more than 550,000 members mailed in the annual ballot, which helps guide the environmental group's lobbying agenda.

The results: 39.9 percent favored the anti-immigration push, and 40.1 percent backed the policy that takes no stand.

Both in Florida and on the national level, activists feared an anti-immigration vote would turn minority groups against one of the nation's largest and most influential environmental groups.
