VOTE NOW FOR THE BEST OF ORLANDO® 2021!

So good, it's scary

Owl Goingback's reign of terror continues. The Orlando-area author's 1999 paperback original "Darker than Night" (Signet) has been nominated in the Best Novel category of the Bram Stoker Awards, the annual competition sponsored by the Horror Writers Association. Goingback was first recognized by the group in 1996, when his debut, "Crota," lost Best Novel honors to Stephen King's "The Green Mile" but won as Best First Novel.

Goingback's novels combine storytelling fear tactics with the philosophy of his Native American heritage. His competition this year includes Thomas Harris ("Hannibal"), Peter Straub ("Mr. X") and ... King again, for "Low Men in Yellow Coats," a novella from the largely nonhorror "Hearts in Atlantis" collection. The winner will be named May 13 in Denver, Colo.

"If I lose against King this time, I will take a picture of myself standing next to my minivan and send it to him," Goingback threatens. These horror writers; they kill us.
