Pushing carts out of the way

Imagine a world with 24-hour supermarkets that deliver to every doorstep -- no carts, narrow aisles or checkout lines. That is the virtual reality now that more and more grocers are wiring up for online shoppers, including the Goodings Supermarket at Heathrow (120 International Parkway; 333-9792).

Just visit www.goodings.com and click "home delivery" to send clerks fetching from your shopping list. Same-day delivery costs an additional $8.95, next-day delivery is $6.95. Or for $3.95, Goodings will have your order bagged and ready to go when you arrive. The delivery service is available only in the Longwood (32779) and Lake Mary (32746) ZIP codes, but those who live elsewhere can find the same basic service at NetGrocer or Peapod. Those companies ship nonperishables for an average of $7 per order, plus the cost of the food, of course.
