The 2016 Orlando Fringe is in the books (see last week's Live Active Cultures column for the post-mortem) but another big arts festival is just booting up. Submissions are currently being sought for the second Art in Odd Places Orlando event, which brings the international installation project to unconventional venues along downtown's Magnolia Avenue and Central Boulevard this Nov. 11-13. This year's theme is "Play," and selected local artists can receive up to a $500 stipend ($1,000 for out-of-state participants). Read the call for proposals and upload your idea at artinoddplaces.org before June 21.
The long-promised 1,700-seat Steinmetz acoustic hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts is inching closer to reality, as the Center announced last month the receipt of $5.75 million in donations (from Judson and Joyce Green, Jonathan and Krista Ledden, and Linda Downs and Angela Majors) toward the Phase 2 capital campaign. No groundbreaking date has been announced for the addition, originally intended to accommodate the Orlando Philharmonic (which has recently renovated the Plaza Live as its new home) and Orlando Ballet.
Young post-high school theater professionals interested in working on more than their tans this summer should investigate Florida Theatrical Association's workshop series on vocal performance, theater directing and auditioning at the Abbey. The five-hour intensive sessions will be held on June 18, July 9 and 23, and Aug. 20; featured instructors will include Priscilla Bagley, Andrea Canny and Kenny Howard. Each workshop costs $75 to $150 per person and slots are limited. Email [email protected] for more information and registration.
