Island flavors shine at Sunrise

Just as an island vacation can rejuvenate your spirit, an tropical-themed culinary excursion can wake up your taste buds. For proof, visit Caribbean Sunrise Restaurant and Lounge.

The place isn't much to look at from the outside, but the new mom-and-pop eatery puts together some spicy lunch platters. The West Indian menu constantly changes, but you can usually count on a choice of conch fritters, Jamaican-style spicy beef pastries, coconut-fried shrimp and sweet plantains. The "curried goat with rice and vegetables" special gets snapped up fast; at $5.95, it's worth every penny. The meat is as tender as a slow-cooked roast.

Don't go if you're in a hurry -- sometimes service moves at a pace geared more toward a day at the beach than a tight lunch schedule. But live reggae on Friday nights provides a chance to linger even longer.
