Inventive spins on summer wines

It used to be that you went into a liquor store, got a bottle of Merlot or Riesling, and that was it. Now, there are enough vineyards and new vintages to make your head spin.

Two inventive young vineyards are changing expectations about "red" and "white" wines by blending several grapes in one bottle. Sokol Blosser out of Oregon has a nine-grape melange called Evolution, combining everything from Chardonnay to muscat. It's a beautiful, delicately fruity summer wine. Try Tim's Wine Market (407-895-9463) for a bottle at around $14.

It takes about 600 grapes to make one bottle of wine, and California's Bonny Doon may use 600 different kinds for their Big House Red -- "too numerous to mention," the label reads. Fortunately, this approach produces a splendid wine, rich and full-bodied without puckering up your face with tannin. Find it at The Fresh Market in Altamonte (407-786-1801) in the $11 neighborhood.
