My mother-in-law is an 80-year-old widow, has one eye and lives by herself. Her church is constantly begging her for money, in her own living room. It's typical of the way churches generate maximum funds these days. Now, Mayor Dyer will match funds to church-based programs using tax money during a budget crunch. Not satisfied with taking our federal taxes to be spent on property purchases, local preachers are grabbing local tax money, too. They should have already been helping my mother-in-law.

Separating faith-based programs from the church is not an effective camouflage. Money given to a church has a nasty habit of disappearing under the guise of "administrative expenses." There is a reason their accounting is kept secret. TV studios, huge parking lots, ostentatious churches the size of stadiums and facilities that continually swallow neighboring residences do not aid a community.

You can bet preachers would have roasted Mayor Dyer from the pulpits for not "offering" yet another source for their whims. The Republican party has become simply a misguided octopus religion that feeds on fear and outrageous fiscal irresponsibility in the name of humanity. How can they be trusted (and audited) to spend responsibly?
