Golden Knights still on time-out

Federal judges handed down sentences last week to a former Seminole County sheriff's deputy and an Orange County judge's daughter caught in the scandal involving illegal cell-phone use by key University of Central Florida football players.

David Smith and Nikisha Bronson, daughter of Circuit Judge Theotis Bronson, were placed on probation and ordered to make other amends. Former coach Gene McDowell is awaiting sentencing for lying about circulating Smith's tip that the feds were looking into illegal use of AT&T cellphones by players arranged by a former UCF player -- with Bronson's help.

With McDowell's sentencing the only court action left against those so far implicated, UCF officials might look forward to resolution of potential disciplinary actions against the players. But "the case has not been finally resolved yet," says Assistant U.S. Attorney Ralph Hopkins -- forcing the Golden Knights to continue to face an uncertain future.
